Summer Lawn Care Tips

With over a generation of experience at Berkshire Turf Direct our team have laid and maintained turf through seasonal extremes. We’ve witnessed record rainfall and droughts and have learnt to tailor our approach to managing lawns along the way. This post is the first of our four seasons lawn care series.

Without adequate care in the summer your lawn can soon look straggly and unkempt. This post will cover the tools you’ll need weed control, watering frequency, and the immortal question; How low should I mow? We’ll close with a few of your frequently asked questions.

Mowing Height

Theories of mowing height vary based on the type of grass and weather conditions. However, the consensus among lawn care experts is that you should raise your mowing height during the summer. Mowing too low will leave the soil vulnerable to heat and dehydration. This may result in a patchy lawn with areas of discolouration.

Water Your Lawn

The early hours of the morning are the best time to water your lawn. This is vital because leaving your lawn wet overnight increases the chances of turf diseases. When watering you should use one inch of water per week by irrigation or rainfall.

Weeds

In reality weeds are a year round concern. However, you should take particular care to ensure you tackle weeds during the summer. Do not let them fester and thrive.

What’s the best time of year to order turf?

In reality turf can be bought in every season. We’ve laid turf deep into December and at the height of summer. Turf is a resilient fabric that can thrive with adequate sunlight and hydration. The key is to ensure that the turf is managed adequately for 7-10 days after its laid. From here on, the lawn will not require intensive maintenance.

Do you offer a lawn care or garden maintenance service?

The core of our service remains lawn turf. However, at our discretion we can offer some lawn care or garden maintenance services. In the event we’re unable to help we can recommend local contractors who can.
